Monday, May 26, 2025 – Day 286

Good morning.

Happy Memorial Day!

Don’t forget the veterans who gave everything to protect our freedoms. If you’ve got a moment today, take it to honor them. We’ll be heading to the parade in Crystal Lake—it’s become a meaningful part of the day for us.

Yesterday was one of those golden family days. We celebrated Alex and Nicole with the perfect family only couple’s shower, hosted by Kim and Aras. Cindy and I were right there in the mix. We had all the kids plus the Aart family of six. It felt full in the best kind of way.

The weather even played along. Blue skies and enough sun to take the edge off the lake wind. I, of course, was too warm—my muscles from neck to calves are still dancing the ALS jig 24/7, and that internal motion cranks up the heat. I used to be the guy shivering in restaurants under the air vents. Now I’m radiating heat like a human space heater. I still chose to sit in the sun and catch up on my vitamin D.

One of the cool moments? A bunch of us watched Alex out in the driveway as he practiced making bronze rings. His plan is to make their wedding bands himself, which I think is awesome. He’s getting the hang of it—and at 14 cents an ounce, bronze is a safe place to learn. Especially when gold is running about $3,350 an ounce. I did the math (with help): that’s 24,000 times the price. Keep practicing, buddy…110 days to go. Alex is taking gold donations. Maybe someone’s got old jewelry from years gone by to donate?

Kim and Aras transformed their old office into a dining room to fit all 15 of us. We split into the classic “adult table” and “kids table,” although we did promote one kid to balance things out. It brought back memories—back when sitting at the adult table felt like winning a prize. We didn’t realize the prize came with champagne. Or that we only got promoted when someone passed on. So maybe not something to wish for too soon.

The whole thing was lovely. We played games (yes, even me), and lunch was filet, lobster, good potatoes (family recipe), and I think there was a salad hidden somewhere. I never found it. When lunch was over, there were few leftovers in sight. After some “how well do you know Alex and Nicole?”, which should really be called…”how well do Alex and Nicole know each other?”. There was laughter, and that shared energy you get when everyone’s genuinely excited about what’s ahead. You could feel and hear the love in every corner of the room. I think it’s still echoing in my head as I type this.

After lunch, Alex and Nicole cut the cake, and everyone kind of scattered—some to the porch, some to the back deck. Just easy conversation and slow moments. It was especially nice to spend time with the Aart family, who flew in from New Jersey. Their visits are rare, and this one felt extra special.

After four hours, I hit my limit and Cindy and I made our exit. Many hugs later, we were in the car heading home—and of course, halfway back, we realized we never got a group photo. Crap! Happens more than we care to admit. Next shot at redemption: September 13 in Maine.

Thank you, Kim and Aras, and everyone who helped behind the scenes. You created something really beautiful. And thank you for the leftovers—they’re about to become my breakfast.

Have a great Memorial Day!

Love you guys! ❤️
