Tuesday, August 12, 2025 – Day 364
Tuesday, August 12, 2025
Good morning, all.
I’m still wrestling with the mixed feelings I have about committing to the late-November trip to St. Maarten. The thought of being confined to a wheelchair there worries me. On the surface, it makes sense…mobility challenges, unfamiliar surroundings…but then I go back to what I’m learning in the book I’m reading No Ordinary Time, the biography of FDR during World War II.
The book describes how Franklin Roosevelt lived and thought after contracting polio at age 39 and losing the use of his legs. He went on to be elected President of the United States four times, all while confined to a wheelchair. The author often gives us glimpses into FDR’s mood and personal thoughts, yet so far, there’s nothing showing him fretting about the chair itself or not being able to walk. This was a man carrying the weight of the Great Depression, WWII, and the future of the free world…and still, nothing written that indicates polio altered his spirit. He traveled extensively, navigated enormous challenges, and yes, he had plenty of help… but he did it.
So what’s my problem? Why am I nervous about a relaxing vacation on a gorgeous island? Sure, it will take extra effort and planning, but I’ll have help. If I say no, I’ll regret missing an opportunity to make more memories with my grandkids. Those opportunities are precious — and fewer in number with each passing day.
So here’s my commitment: I’m going to work through my fears, Cindy’s fears (she’s right there with me), stop piling up excuses, and focus on creating a fun, joy-filled vacation with the people I love most. While I’m not 109% committed…I’m glad to be giving it serious thought and not saying “no” just because it will be difficult.
On another note, Cindy’s feeling better, so our social calendar is back in motion — and the rest of the week is packed. I’m looking forward to catching up with everyone. Sorry to Jody for canceling breakfast, twice; let’s aim for next week and make it happen.
Today’s photos
#1: Update on Alex’s wedding band. Looks like he’ll need a jewelry expert to solder the joint. I like that he’s trying.
#2: Is a cloth ladder connected to the bed frame to help me get out of bed. I can’t do any sit-up type moves, but my arms can do the job…so this is a simple solution and paid for by ALS United.
#3: of Cindy and me in St.Maarten - Dec’ 24
Have a great Tuesday. Love you guys! ❤️
