Saturday, September 13, 2025 – Day 396

Good morning!! 😃
The big day has arrived—Alex and Nicole’s wedding day. For 396 days this date has lived in the back of my mind. I was always worried that something with my health might keep me from being here, or that I’d somehow detract from the occasion. But here I am, and today feels like a gift.
This weekend has already been terrific. Family on both sides have gone out of their way to make sure I’m safe, comfortable, and included. That means more than I can say. And to Nicole’s family, thank you big smiles and warm welcomes.
Yesterday was a beautiful, sunny day—the kind you wish you could bottle. The warmth of the sun, the backdrop of the mountains, and the joy of seeing Alex and Nicole surrounded by the people they love. Being in this lodge has been its own blessing too: a chance to spend time together, focus on friendships, or simply rest.
The morning started lazily—well, almost. The hallways here are long, and I’ve been splitting my time between walking and the wheelchair. I’d rather walk because I’m in control, but it eats up my energy. Cindy and I headed to breakfast on foot…except we missed the elevator and slowly crawled all the way to the end of the hallway before realizing our mistake. Back we went, and by the time we found the elevators it felt like I’d walked two miles.
After breakfast, I surrendered to the wheelchair. Barb, Mark, Cindy, and I toured the nearby town of Bethel. It’s a charming old downtown—walkable for most, drivable for us. Beautiful shops, well-kept homes, and views that stretch for miles. Lovely to admire, though I’ll pass on the 100-plus inches of snow they get each winter. Crystal Lake suits me just fine.
We spent the afternoon at Steam Mill Brewing, which we pass by every time we leave the resort. You really have no choice…you have to stop. Good IPAs, wine for the ladies, a kitchen for lunch, and plenty of personality. The place had a throwback feel, with quirky signs and cozy little shelters for when the weather turns. Nikki was able to slip away while the kids napped—Zack drew the short straw and stayed back. Thanks, Zack!
By late afternoon, it was time for rehearsal. The ceremony site is stunning—set against the mountain backdrop, and once decorated and filled with guests, it will be unforgettable. The only wild card? The path down to the site is a rocky path and uneven. A little risky for heels…or a guy with a walker. No mishaps getting there and back last night. I think everybody knows their assignments. A reminder to the wedding party, if you’re reading this, arrive no later than 3:45 pm this afternoon!
Dinner followed, first the rehearsal meal and then a welcome dinner for all the guests who had arrived. It was the perfect chance to mingle, reconnect, and relax. The toasts from the wedding party were especially moving—stories of Alex and Nicole that gave us parents a glimpse into the couple through the eyes of their closest friends. Hearing those stories confirmed what Cindy and I have always seen in them, and they set the stage beautifully for the toast I’ll give tonight.
I’m so looking forward to this day, to celebrating with 100 of their closest friends and family.
One special person will be missing, though. Peter—one of Alex’s longtime swimming buddies—stayed back in Michigan as he and his wife are expecting a baby any day now. If timing works out, we’ll hear from him by phone during the ceremony. Peter, we’ll miss you, but all the best as you begin your biggest adventure yet.
One of my college friends from NIU will also be absent. Robyn has a family wedding back in Illinois. I know she also wants to be here. We’ll miss you!
Have a great Saturday. Love you guys! ❤️
