Tuesday, February 24, 2026 – Day 550
Tuesday, February 24, 2026
Good morning, everyone.
I had planned to tell a triplet story today, but we had a major malfunction last night that needs to be addressed.
My journey to bed requires four transfers—wheelchair to stairlift, stairlift to small upstairs wheelchair, wheelchair to toilet, and finally into bed. It’s an exhausting routine, but it’s the price I pay to sleep in our bedroom. Eventually, that will change. A hospital bed will move to the main floor. Where? Good question.
Last night I took the stairlift up ahead of Cindy. It moves slowly, so she stays behind to turn off lights and gather the last few things. When I reached the landing, I had a fleeting thought about making the transfer on my own. It’s one of the easier ones.
But that thought passed quickly.
After Thursday’s fall—ironically on another “easy” transfer—I promised Cindy I would wait for her. So I did.
She joined me at the top. I stood up from the lift, reached for the armrest of the small electric wheelchair, and began to pivot. In the middle of shifting my weight, the armrest of the wheelchair suddenly broke free and crashed to the floor.
For a split second, everything was headed in the wrong direction.
Somehow Cindy had a solid grip on the gait belt. She held firm and stopped me from plunging forward—either over the wheelchair or into the railing headfirst. Instead of a catastrophic fall, she pulled me back onto the stairlift.
We both just looked at each other. WTF
The damage? A welded support piece on the wheelchair had failed. Clean break. That chair is officially done. It’s a shame—it’s been a convenient little workhorse upstairs.
We still used it to get me to the bathroom and into bed, though it wasn’t pretty. Today we’ll figure out how to get a regular wheelchair upstairs as a replacement. We dodged something serious last night. Really serious.
Call it luck. Call it timing. Call it grace. Whatever it was, it showed up at exactly the right moment. What could have been a trip to the ER turned into a minor inconvenience and a broken armrest.
I’ll take that trade every time.
It’s probably time for me to get out of bed. It’s almost 9:00 am
Have a safe Tuesday. Love you guys! ❤️
