Today’s post is from Dave Moritzen, a high school friend of Cindy’s.

Good afternoon all,

My name is Dave Moritzen. I live, as Cindy and Andy would say, in the Frontier of North Central Wisconsin.

Cindy and I met ‘back in the day’ when we were high school classmates in Crystal Lake. We knew of each other in high school but we weren’t what I call friends. After graduation, we both went our separate ways. We connected at a class reunion many years later (too many years to mention), and we developed the friendship that we didn’t have in high school. We caught up on each other’s lives through emails and an occasional phone chat. My wife, Laurie, and I spent several weekends with Cindy and Andy at their home in Crystal Lake and whenever possible they visited Laurie and me in the Frontier.

At the time, I was a member of the 1,000 Mile Club, which means I completed a thousand miles a year on both cross-country skis and my mountain bike. I felt that I was 10 feet tall and bulletproof at that achievement.

Then one day Cindy casually mentioned that Andy was a marathon runner, triathlete and an IRONMAN. Twice!

Boy, did I tumble off my pedestal.

Here is the point of this story. I was in awe of his achievements. When I finally got to know him never once did he mention any of these accomplishments. That’s the kind of man he was. He was not boastful. He didn’t brag. He let his actions do the talking. He helped his family, friends, neighbors and even people he didn’t know. A humble, human dynamo who worked tirelessly at anything he chose to do.

I am so thankful for the short time that I was in his company. I appreciated his friendship and I sure wish we had more opportunities to get to know each other better.

Ride in Peace, my friend.

Dave
