Monday, September 15, 2025 – Day 398

Good morning, welcome to Monday. We’re back in Crystal Lake this morning, and I feel weary. Traveling is always physically exhausting for me—and when you add the emotional weight of a wedding weekend, this trip was no exception. I swear there’s an inverse relationship between the joy of a family wedding and the fatigue that follows. What follows is a recap of the day, which will take a few days to capture it all.

Sunday, September 14, 2025 - Day 397

Good morning my friends and family. Congratulations to Alex and Nicole on their marriage yesterday!! It was a wonderful, fulfilled magical wedding day for Alex and Nicole. The whole day was perfect and there is much to talk about. It’s going to take a few days to provide the highlights. And since I slept in this morning, you’ll have to wait until Monday for details. I’ll leave you with the father of the groom wedding toast….

Saturday, September 13, 2025 – Day 396

Good morning!! 😃 The big day has arrived—Alex and Nicole’s wedding day. For 396 days this date has lived in the back of my mind. I was always worried that something with my health might keep me from being here, or that I’d somehow detract from the occasion. But here I am, and today feels like a gift. This weekend has already been terrific. Family on both sides have gone out of their way to make sure I’m safe, comfortable, and included.

Friday, September 12, 2025 – Day 395

Good morning from the Jordan Hotel at Sunday River in Maine. This is a remote spot that doubles as a lively ski resort. They average more than 100 inches of snow, and the runs look plenty challenging. I can already see some ski days in Alex’s future—if he ever decides to take it seriously. Nicole’s family cabin is less than 30 minutes away, so the convenience factor is covered. Convincing Alex will be the tough part—too many years of winter swimming instead of skiing!

Thursday, September 11, 2025 – Day 394

Good morning from Portland, Maine. Our day started way too early, with too much luggage and barely enough hands to manage it. At least we had a service drive us to the airport and Mark and Barb were our traveling companions or they would tell you that they were more like Sherpas considering all the luggage they had to help us with. Seriously…it was too much and we would have been screwed without them.

Wednesday, September 10, 2025 – Day 393

Good morning, blog readers. Wedding, T-minus three days. We’re off to Maine this morning with a 7:00 a.m. pickup to O’Hare. It’s going to be a tiring day, mostly because the night didn’t go smoothly. At 2:15 a.m., I knocked the respirator hose off my mask. With the mask on, I’ve never been able to reconnect the hose—I tried. After giving up and shutting the machine off, I just wanted to fall back asleep.

Tuesday, September 9, 2025 – Day 392

Good morning! Wedding day T-minus 4 days. Sorry if I’m a little obsessive about Alex and Nicole’s wedding this Saturday, but I’ve probably spent more hours thinking about this day than almost anything else in my life—because I was never sure how far my ALS would have progressed by now. A year ago, when I was just learning what ALS could do, I honestly wondered if I’d even still be here.

Monday, September 8, 2025 – Day 391

Good morning everyone. It’s finally here—wedding week for Alex and Nicole. Saturday is the day I’ve been counting down to, and I’m sure they’ve been doing the same. It wasn’t that long ago that it seemed this day would never arrive and now we’re at T-minus five days. I can feel the excitement building and a little nervousness as well. My legs have carried me to this point, though they’re not quite the dance partners I’d hoped they’d be.

Sunday, September 7, 2025 – Day 390

Good morning, Andy’s Army. Yesterday’s post was missing the photo of Andy’s Army Chicago Marathon shirt. These mistakes happen here and there…fortunately there are people to catch them for me. I ended up posting the photo separately, but in case you missed it, I’m posting again this morning. Yesterday brought me a gift I never saw coming. Lisa, a good friend of Barb’s from high school, is in town for their 50th reunion.

Andy’s Army Chicago Marathon t-shirt

Whoops…forgot to post the t-shirt photo in the blog this morning.

Saturday, September 6, 2025 – Day 389

Good morning, it’s good to be with you. We’re putting together a list for anyone interested in a t-shirt to support the Andy’s Army runners of the Chicago Marathon on October 12, 2025. Look for the photo below. So far we’ve got about 50 people signed up. Price is still TBD—it won’t be much. You don’t need to attend the race to get one… if you’d like a shirt, reply to Cindy, me, or this blog.

Friday, September 5, 2025 – Day 388

Good morning from a comfy, spider-free zone with a toasty fire warming this early morning. My giant brown, poisonous in my imagination. spider finally came out of hiding and started crawling up the fireplace brick. This time I won the battle… and then a second one showed up 😳. I frantically crushed that one too, and suddenly my adrenaline was fired up before I even started to write. Whew…glad that’s resolved.

Thursday, September 4, 2025 – Day 387

Good morning!! Yesterday was the ALS Classic at Cog Hill in Lemont, and it was packed with highlights—too many to list, but I’ll try to give you the best of them. Nicole flew in for the day, arriving at O’Hare at 7:00 a.m. Since no one was volunteering for a sunrise pickup, she spent a few hours in the Admirals Club before we all met at the course. Check-in wasn’t until 11:00, and even then we were early at 10:30.

Wednesday, September 3, 2025 – Day 386

Good morning, new friends, old friends, and friends forever. Yesterday I saw my pulmonologist, Dr. Shah, for what may well be my final visit. We talked through the remaining treatment options, most of which I’ve already received. The one thing still pending is the humidifier that was ordered a month ago to help with my dry mouth at night. Dr. Shah said he’d resubmit the order in hopes of moving it along.

Tuesday, September 2, 2025 – Day 385

Good morning. Well… I’m back in my chair, but still no sign of the big bad brown spider. I’m just hoping it doesn’t decide to peek out while I’m sitting here. I’ve been enjoying the Prey books and I’m on the last one that was mailed. (Hint, hint.) Of course, this week is packed with doctor appointments and other commitments, so reading time will slow down for a bit. I also want to give Amazon a chance to drop off any packages.

Monday, September 1, 2025 – Day 384

Good morning, Happy Labor Day! Spiders and snakes. Those are two things that give me the creeps. Which still surprises me, because as a kid I wasn’t fazed by either. We used to collect garter snakes by the dozens and keep them in a Styrofoam cooler in the basement. I don’t think we ever had a plan for them—they were just our ā€œpets,ā€ hidden from everyone else in the house.

Sunday, August 31, 2025 – Day 383

Good morning, friends and family. Coming up this Wednesday is the ALS United Classic, a golf tournament to raise awareness and money for ALS. I was invited to play, but the idea of playing golf scared me so I didn’t commit immediately. These days, swinging a golf club feels a little like entering a dance competition and told not to step on my partner’s toes. My balance is highly questionable, and staying upright is not guaranteed.

Saturday, August 30, 2025 – Day 382

Good morning, and welcome to the last days of August. With Labor Day upon us, those winter thoughts start creeping in. Sorry. I’ve missed a whole string of birthdays my high school friends celebrated this month. Happy Birthday to Carrie, Chrissy, Paul, Tom, and Pam—all in the last week. I hope you were surrounded by laughter, love, and a cache of friends and family. šŸŽ‰šŸ„³šŸŽˆšŸŽ‚ At dinner on Thursday, Terri was told me about an NBC feature story on a man named Rakesh, living with ALS from a rare genetic mutation—so rare it’s called a ā€œnano rareā€ condition.

Friday, August 29, 2025 – Day 381

Good morning, everyone. Thank you for being here today. Last night we had dinner with my old IMC work friend—my ā€œwork wifeā€ā€”Terri, and her sister Marilyn. (For those who don’t know, IMC was the company I worked at before it merged with Cargill and became Mosaic.) Terri and I worked side by side for 20 years, so it’s always a treat to reconnect. Marilyn lives with a rare neurological condition called Transverse Myelitis (TM), which causes inflammation of the spinal cord.

Thursday, August 28, 2025 – Day 380

Good morning all, and thank you for walking this ALS journey with me. I’ve shared before about one of the more unpredictable symptoms of ALS: pseudo bulbar affect (PBA). About half of ALS patients experience it—sudden waves of emotion that come out of nowhere. A couple weeks ago I was prescribed a drug called Nuedexta to help manage it, but swallowing the pills was too difficult…I kept choking them back up.
